Teamwork as an Art Form. ITPS at III Open Project Management Championship among Enterprises

01.06.2021

ITPS Group of Companies acted as one of the organizers and presented two teams at the III Open Project Management Championship among Enterprises, which took place on May 28, 2021, at Morion Digital Technopark in Perm. The event organizers also included the Faculty of Economics of the Perm State University, ER-Telecom JSC, branch of the Moscow Department of Project Management Institute (PMI) and the Centre for the Evaluation and Development of Project Management. The participants of the contest were the representatives of the United Service Centre Branch of URALCHEM, RPA Iskra, Perm Scientific Industrial Instrument Making Company (PNPPK) and others. In total, 13 teams from 9 companies competed in the efficiency of managing a typical project in real time.

The project management championships have been held from the year 2016. They are held in the form of a game with a focus on useful hand-on skills. The project management is carried out with SimulTrain® simulator. In the game process, for several hours the participants go through a cycle of 12 “gaming” weeks, during which they develop a plan, deal with project tasks and take control over the changes. The process models various situations close to reality. After the game, each team get their results as to how they succeeded with managing time, budget, and quality. Each parameter has its own criteria and priority.

According to Leonid Tikhomirov, ITPS CEO, project management is the ABC of efficiency in the modern business world. “The complexity and resource-intensity of the projects grows year-on-year, involve more uncertainties. The requirements to the tools and methods are increasing. It is very important to keep the balance here. In our work, we use both the traditional cascade model and flexible management techniques, we make a stake on the performer who possess hard and soft skills”, noted the expert.

ITPS Group of Companies took the second place in overall ranking and won the nomination “The Best Project Quality Management Team”. The leader was the team of the United Service Centre Branch of URALCHEM, while the Perm State University was the third. In additional nominations, the team of PNPPK became the best in managing the project’s risks and the team of the United Service Centre Branch of URALCHEM became the best in managing the players’ motivation.

According to Aleksandr Krokhalev, ITPS Director on Digital Transformation of Oil and Gas Companies, it is important to start training future specialists in the basic project management skills already in school. “Today, a lot depends on the skills that, on the one hand, are not linked to any particular industry, but, on the other hand, define the success of teamwork in every industry. First of all, it is the ability to start communication, listen and hear what the colleagues and partners have to say, the ability to view a matter from different angles and think several steps ahead. Here we are not talking so much about the professional competencies and experience, but rather about personal qualities that HR specialists always pay attention to. As any other skill, these abilities can be trained. For the major part – on one’s own. The people who can do it are the most valuable assets for the business”.

“The future lies with hybrid strategies that leverage the strengths of various techniques. It requires high adaptivity and creativity. In our company, focused on the implementation of innovative projects and the development of new digital products, we do a lot level up these valuable skills. That’s why we were willing to take part in this game both as sponsors and participants. For us, it’s an opportunity to apply in practice not only the standard management algorithms, but also to use our self-organization, analytical and negotiation skills. I believe that such events are very important because they help to bring together the business community, encourage the exchange of experience and motivate young specialists to develop key management skills”, Leonid Tikhomirov summed up.
