Managing events here and now. Gazpromneft -Vostok and ITPS create a digital twin of the Urmano-Archinskaya group of fields

13.05.2021

Production Control Center of Gazpromneft-Vostok LLC obtained a high-tech tool for efficient management of oil and gas production – a digital twin or an integrated model (IM) of the Urmano- Archinskaya group of fields. The project’s goal was to improve the business efficiency of mining assets with the help of modern technologies. The project on the development and launch of IM was implemented in partnership with the ITPS Group of Companies.

Production Control Center is an integral part of Gazprom Neft's comprehensive Asset of the Future program aimed at the organizational and digital transformation of the business model of the company’s exploration and production unit at all management levels – from production workshop to corporate headquarters. The program's goal is to improve business processes, feasibility, and development of a modern digital tool base to increase the efficiency of the unit and achieve the company’s strategic goal: to become an industry benchmark in terms of operational indicators by increasing labor productivity and reducing production costs.

The main task of the Production Control Center is to follow up the implementation of production plans at the operational horizon. The integrated model is one of the asset performance management tools since it quickly calculates the optimal operating modes for the wells.

The uniqueness of the project lies in the fact that due to the restrictions in force in 2020, most of the work, including both development of the model and training of the personnel, was conducted remotely. ITPS specialists have created a comprehensive solution based on IPM Petroleum Experts software, which includes nine PVT fluid models, twelve reservoir models (material balance), 119 models of production wells (x-tree and ESP), eleven models of injection and absorption wells, one collection and transportation system model, one model of the reservoir pressure maintenance system. The assembly and configuration of the IM were done as well.

As part of the pilot operation, together with the engineers of the Production Control Center, three cycles of updating the component models and MI to actual data were carried out. With each update cycle, the degree of participation of Production Control Center specialists increased. At the final stage of the project, the specialists of Gazpromneft-Vostok obtained all the necessary competencies and practical skills to work independently with the Integrated Model.

As a result of the successful implementation of the project, Production Control Center got a tool allowing to make a quick short-term forecast of hydrocarbon production for up to one year, optimize operating modes of production wells, identify potential risks and conduct an express assessment of the economic efficiency of activities at the wells, the technological effect of which is preliminarily calculated on an integrated model. Comparison with the actual indicators confirmed the reliability of the forecasts. It offered the company additional opportunities to improve production efficiency and reduce production costs.

“The main benefit of the unprecedented Asset of the Future program being implemented by Gazprom Neft is that it is directed to the future, setting such ambitious tasks as achieving technological leadership in the era of Industry 4.0, when analytical work with production data will become the main condition for being competitive. However, the technological reforms carried out within the program's framework make it possible to get the results today. By carrying out a phased transformation of production and operational processes, the company can manage events on the operational horizon, quickly eliminate all existing problems and get the greatest benefit from the asset shortly. The launch of the digital twin of the Urmano-Archinskaya group of fields is a vivid example of how breakthrough technologies change production beyond recognition and bring it to a qualitatively new level,” noted the CEO of the ITPS Group of Companies, Leonid Tikhomirov.
